IiRl 11 +*� Resolution: R-21-0286 File Number: 9302 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 7/8/2021 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION RESCINDING RESOLUTION NO. 20-0380 ADOPTED ON NOVEMBER 19, 2020 WHICH CO - DESIGNATED SOUTHWEST 9 STREET BETWEEN SOUTHWEST 15 AVENUE AND SOUTHWEST 20 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "JUAN JOSE PERUYERO WAY" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED ("CITY CODE"), AND REPLACING IN LIEU THEREOF THIS RESOLUTION CO -DESIGNATING NORTHWEST 3 STREET BETWEEN NORTHWEST 17 AVENUE AND NORTHWEST 19 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "JUAN JOSE PERUYERO WAY" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CITY CODE); FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Joe Carollo WHEREAS, on November 19, 2020, the City Commission adopted Resolution No. R-20- 0380 which co -designated Southwest 9 Street between Southwest 15 and Southwest 20 Avenue as "Juan Jose Peruyero Way"; and WHEREAS, after the adoption of Resolution No. R-20-0380, the Miami -Dade County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution No. 388-21, which designated Southwest 9 Street between Southwest 15 and Southwest 20 Avenue as "Juan Jose Peruyero Way"; and WHEREAS, subsequently, it was identified that the intended area is already co - designated; and WHEREAS, in consultation with Juan Jose Peruyero's ("Peruyero") relatives, a new area for co -designation has been identified; and WHEREAS, Peruyero was a Cuban exile and anti -communist activist; and WHEREAS, in 1961, Peruyero, was part of Brigada 2506, took part in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and later served as president of its veteran's association in the City of Miami ("City"); and WHEREAS, Peruyero was captured by Fidel Castro's ("Castro") forces and imprisoned for a year before returning to the United States; and WHEREAS, in 1977, Peruyero was assassinated in the City and the location of the assassination is located within the area to be co -designated; and WHEREAS, other Bay of Pigs veterans fighting for freedom for Cuba claimed that Peruyero was killed by the Castro regime; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 9302 (Revision:) Printed On: 711912021 File ID: 9302 Enactment Number: R-21-0286 WHEREAS, the City wishes to honor Peruyero's contributions to the cause of fighting for freedom for Cuba; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby rescinds Resolution No. R-20-0380 adopted on November 19, 2020. Section 3. Northwest 3 Street between Northwest 17 Avenue and Northwest 19 Avenue, Miami, Florida is hereby co -designated as "Juan Jose Peruyero Way" pursuant to Section 54- 137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended. Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six for sign installation within the newly designated roadways. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
