BY SAYA WOOLFALK
The proposed location for the
permanent artwork is within
Peacock Park in Coconut
Grove.
Located just outside the oak
hammock, between Glass &
Vine and the playing fields, the
location was selection for ease
of interaction with visitors of all
ages, and visibility from the
corner of McFarlane and South
Bayshore Drive.
The artist and fabrication team
will work with the city of Miami
to determine the final
placement, also taking into
consideration: height above sea
level, excavation logistics and
archeological preservation.

Chapel for a River of Grass will be
situated within the oak hammock of
Miami's Peacock Park in Coconut
Grove.
Just minutes from the Marjory
Stoneman Douglas House, where the
activist lived for 70 years, Woolfalk will
conjure her memory with a familiar
scene: a place to sit in repose,
surrounded by the beauty of nature.
During the course of her research,
Saya was captivated by the many
images of Marjory sitting outdoors,
engaged in intimate conversations.
These images show her as a
thoughtful leader, a woman whose
words carried significant power even
into her old age.

CHAPEL FOR A RIVER OF GRASS, CONT'D.
In the center of chapel will be two
beautiful, hand-crafted stainless steel
chairs. Reminiscent of the mangroves
emerging from wetlands, visitors will
be invited to sit with their companions
and have intimate conversations about
their commitments to preserving the
environment, and thus, the future.

The floor of the chapel will be composed of Terrazzo and tiled
mosaic, with its design inspired by an aerial view of the
Everglades.
Sitting on the floor will be Stoneman's Douglas' straw hat, with
which she was often pictured. Beside the hat will lay her book,
Rivers of Gross. Both will be composed of stainless steel.
As if you are sitting on two mangrove roots emerging from the
water, the whisper of Douglas' words etched into the surface
of the mosaic, seem to be emanating from the book.
The miracle of the light pours over
the green and brown expanse of
saw grass and of water, shining
and slow -moving below...

The ceiling of the chapel will be a canopy of laser -cut Royal Palm trees, a species common in the Everglades. Within the
monument, visitors will gaze up at a golden sun to evoke the "miracle of light" within the interior of the canopy.
When inside this chapel dedicated to Marjory, visitors will be surrounded by a portrait of the landscape that Douglas
cherished. They will be immersed in an intimate encounter with an artwork inspired by the landscape she fought to
preserve and share with others.
