A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION PROCLAIMING SOLIDARITY
WITH THE "PATRIA Y VIDA" MOVEMENT TO ENSURE THAT THE WHISPER OF
FREEDOM IN CUBA EMERGES FROM EVERYWHERE; FURTHER PROCLAIMING
MARCH 6, 2021 AS THE DAY OF "PATRIA Y VIDA" IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE JUST
DEMANDS FOR FREEDOM OF THE CUBAN PEOPLE.
WHEREAS, Cuba is a country subjugated by dictators for life, ideologically fanatical,
which appeals to pejorative epithets and slogans of violence and hatred to disqualify and
subdue those who disagree with its abuse of power; and
WHEREAS, at the center of this abominable practice is the infamous phrase "Patric o
Muerte" ("Country or Death") originated by the late dictator Fidel Castro; and
WHEREAS, young conscientious citizens have proclaimed the end of the lapidary
expression " Patria o Muerte" and have clamored to replace it with the phrase "Patric y Vida"
("Country and Life"); and
WHEREAS, as part of that noble endeavor, young composers and singers have also
created a song that they have titled "Patria y Vida" ("Country and Life") to proclaim their
aspirations for a free country without preaching hatred or violence; and
WHEREAS, a line from the song translates to read "No more lies! My people demand
freedom. No more doctrines! / Let us no longer shout `Homeland or Death' but `Homeland and
Life"'; and
WHEREAS, those young people whose song has shocked the conscience of Cubans
inside and outside of Cuba as well as millions of others throughout the world face reprisals from
the Cuban dictatorship; and
WHEREAS, the Cuban exiles who live in Miami and in other parts of the world have
called for a day of solidarity with those young people who have become citizens of conscience;
and
WHEREAS, towards that end, the "Patria y Vida" Solidarity Caravan was carried out on
March 6, 2021 in support of the brave who fight for democracy in Cuba; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission stands in unity with all the freedom loving people of
Miami and the world and joins the chorus to proclaim "Patria Y Vida"; and
WHEREFORE, the City Commission proclaims March 6, 2021 as the Day of "Patria y
Vida" in solidarity with the just demands for freedom of the Cuban people; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida,
as amended, the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an
emergency nature;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
