HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-21-0104City of Miami f Legislation Resolution: R-21-0104 File Number: 8742 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com Final Action Date: 3/11/2021 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION PROCLAIMING SOLIDARITY WITH THE "PATRIA Y VIDA" MOVEMENT TO ENSURE THAT THE WHISPER OF FREEDOM IN CUBA EMERGES FROM EVERYWHERE; FURTHER PROCLAIMING MARCH 6, 2021 AS THE DAY OF "PATRIA Y VIDA" IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE JUST DEMANDS FOR FREEDOM OF THE CUBAN PEOPLE. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Commissioner Ken Russell, Commissioner Joe Carollo, Commissioner Manolo Reyes WHEREAS, Cuba is a country subjugated by dictators for life, ideologically fanatical, which appeals to pejorative epithets and slogans of violence and hatred to disqualify and subdue those who disagree with its abuse of power; and WHEREAS, at the center of this abominable practice is the infamous phrase "Patric o Muerte" ("Country or Death") originated by the late dictator Fidel Castro; and WHEREAS, young conscientious citizens have proclaimed the end of the lapidary expression " Patria o Muerte" and have clamored to replace it with the phrase "Patric y Vida" ("Country and Life"); and WHEREAS, as part of that noble endeavor, young composers and singers have also created a song that they have titled "Patria y Vida" ("Country and Life") to proclaim their aspirations for a free country without preaching hatred or violence; and WHEREAS, a line from the song translates to read "No more lies! My people demand freedom. No more doctrines! / Let us no longer shout `Homeland or Death' but `Homeland and Life"'; and WHEREAS, those young people whose song has shocked the conscience of Cubans inside and outside of Cuba as well as millions of others throughout the world face reprisals from the Cuban dictatorship; and WHEREAS, the Cuban exiles who live in Miami and in other parts of the world have called for a day of solidarity with those young people who have become citizens of conscience; and WHEREAS, towards that end, the "Patria y Vida" Solidarity Caravan was carried out on March 6, 2021 in support of the brave who fight for democracy in Cuba; and WHEREAS, the City Commission stands in unity with all the freedom loving people of Miami and the world and joins the chorus to proclaim "Patria Y Vida"; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 8742 (Revision:) Printed On: 41612021 File ID: 8742 Enactment Number: R-21-0104 WHEREFORE, the City Commission proclaims March 6, 2021 as the Day of "Patric y Vida" in solidarity with the just demands for freedom of the Cuban people; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an emergency nature; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission proclaims solidarity with the "Patric y Vida" movement to ensure that the whisper of freedom in Cuba emerges from everywhere. Section 3. The City Commission further proclaims March 6, 2021 as the Day of "Patric y Vida" in solidarity with the just demands for freedom of the Cuban people. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
