WHEREAS, Arturo Diaz Artiles, affectionately known as "Arturito," was a Cuban exile, born in Santa Clara Cuba in 1920, who emigrated to the City of Miami ("City") in 1961; and WHEREAS, in 1965, Arturo Diaz Artiles opened the Santa Clara Pharmacy ("Pharmacy") at the corner of Southwest 23rd Avenue and Southwest 81" Street, Miami, Florida; and WHEREAS, the Pharmacy was only the second Cuban -owned pharmacy in the City at the time; and WHEREAS, the Pharmacy not only provided medication to its customers but also was an important community gathering location for Cuban exiles, especially the elderly; and WHEREAS, Arturo Diaz Artiles operated the Pharmacy for nearly forty (40) years until 2004; and WHEREAS, in addition to operating a successful business, Arturo Diaz Artiles' accomplishments include such accolades as receiving the United Way Dade County Gold Award for thirty (30) years of service to the community, the Latin Real Estate Organization Board of Directors Award, and the City's Certificate of Appreciation by Mayor Maurice A. Ferre; and WHEREAS, in addition to such awards, on February 25, 1995, the Miami -Dade County ("County") Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation declaring February 25 as Arturo "Arturito" Diaz Artiles Day and he was given the key to the County; and WHEREAS, Arturo Diaz Artiles was a founding member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission wishes to commemorate Arturo Diaz Artiles' life and his contribution to the City by placing a plaza designation at the intersection of Southwest 23rd Avenue and Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida, the same intersection where the Pharmacy was located; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The placement of a plaza designation pursuant to Section 54-136(2) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, at the intersection of Southwest 23rd Avenue and Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida to commemorate Arturo Diaz Artiles is authorized,' subject to all applicable permitting requirements. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
