A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 3 STREET BETWEEN SOUTHWEST 24 AVENUE AND SOUTHWEST
25 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "MARCOS `SHAKEY' RODRIGUEZ WAY"
PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA,
AS AMENDED ("CITY CODE"); FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, Marcos "Shakey" Rodriguez ("Rodriguez") was born on November 29, 1952
and was a Cuban -American basketball coach; and
WHEREAS, Rodriguez graduated from Florida International University ("FIU") in 1975
and became junior varsity coach at Miami Senior High School in 1978; and
WHEREAS, Rodriguez was elevated to head varsity coach at Miami Senior High School
in 1981 and led the program for fourteen (14) seasons, compiling a record of 428-62 and
winning five (5) Florida state titles (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1993); and
WHEREAS, in 1995, Rodriguez was hired as head coach by FIU, becoming one of the
first Hispanic head coaches in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I history; and
WHEREAS, Rodriguez coached FIU for five (5) seasons, leading the team to a 145-79
record before resigning in 2000; and
WHEREAS, afterwards, Rodriguez returned to high school coaching at Dr. Michael M.
Krop Senior High School and Mater Academy Charter School in the Miami area; and
WHEREAS, Rodriguez passed away on November 4, 2020 at age 67;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. Southwest 3 Street between Southwest 24 Avenue and Southwest 25
Avenue, Miami, Florida is hereby co -designated as "Marcos `Shakey' Rodriguez Way" pursuant
to Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six for sign installation within the
newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
