A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING THAT
PORTION WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI LIMITS OF NORTHWEST 16TH STREET
FROM NORTHWEST 11TH AVENUE TO NORTHWEST 14TH AVENUE AS "DR.
EUGENE J. SAYFIE WAY"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT
A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, Dr. Eugene J. Sayfie ("Dr. Sayfie") was born in 1934 in Charleston, West
Virginia to Lebanese immigrant parents; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie graduated Phi Beta Kappa from West Virginia University and
subsequently was awarded a scholarship to Washington University School of Medicine in St.
Louis where he graduated second in his class; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie completed residencies in Internal Medicine at the Harvard
Medical School Services at Boston City Hospital and at the University Hospital of Cleveland as
well as a Cardiology fellowship at the University Hospital of Cleveland; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie practiced medicine for over 50 years and was lauded for his
practice, academic contributions, and his tenacious and persistent pursuit of knowledge; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie was a dedicated husband for 52 years, beloved father of four (4),
and adored grandfather of nine (9); and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie was a multidisciplinary fellow, held several professorship
positions in addition to his medical practice including, but not limited to, an Attending Physician
in Cardiology and Internal Medicine, University of Miami Hospital, University of Miami Leonard
Miller School of Medicine, Concierge Physician in Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Mt. Sinai
Medical Center, and many more; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie has been celebrated and honored with countless awards for
service to his community including the Inaugural Distinguished Master Clinician Award recipient
from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, March of Dimes Outstanding Philanthropic
Couple, Outstanding 100 Doctors in America, as well as various other accolades; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sayfie was a leader within the medical field and the community and
served as President of the Heart Association of Greater Miami, Miami Heart Institute Board of
Trustees, North American Church Board; founding board member of Breakthrough Miami, and
Ransom Everglades School board member; and
WHEREAS, in Dr. Sayfie's honor, the St. George Orthodox Cathedral named its library
as the "Eugene J. Sayfie Library" and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine named a
pavilion as the "Eugene J. Sayfie, M.D., Pavilion for Excellence in Patient Care"; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") would like to honor Dr. Sayfie by co -designating
that portion of Northwest 16th Street between Northwest 11th Avenue and Northwest 14th
Avenue within the limits of the City as "Dr. Eugene J. Sayfie Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby co -designates that portion within the City
limits of Northwest 16th Street from Northwest 11th Avenue to Northwest 14th Avenue, Miami,
Florida as "Dr. Eugene J. Sayfie Way".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District One for sign installation within the
newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
